The different types of buttons on a Harmony 1000

The Logitech Harmony Remote Software identifies the buttons used in Activities as two different types, Hard buttons and Additional buttons.

Buttons considered to be "Hard" buttons are:
  1. The physical hard buttons of the Harmony 1000. These include the volume and channel buttons, the directional pad, mute and previous. All other physical buttons are used for controlling the Harmony 1000 and are not customizable
  2. Custom icons such as the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons that are unique to TiVo Activities
  3. The transport buttons (play, pause, stop...)
  4. Commands mapped to the sidebar. These vary by Activity

Buttons considered to be "Additional" or soft buttons are:
Commands mapped to the LCD screen on the Custom Buttons (Star screen). They can be renamed to your liking.
